While a strategic argument can be made for the Panama Canal being important to fleet movements and indeed that was the argument for building it to begin with, that argument loses weight as we have not controlled it in decades and it has not been a problem. We need to make a diplomatic effort to ensure countries like China do not exert control over it. With regards to other countries like Greenland, we have bases all over the world and our fleets sail most the seas unchallenged. We can project power in many areas of the world fairly efficiently.
I think the expansionistic ideology is more about pride, being grandiose. Many compare trump to Hitler and I see some commonality but Germany’s expansion was predicated upon a severe economic depression…at least at the beginning. I personally believe that trump is a megalomaniac who sees himself as more like a Roman Emperor. I think the he and his sycophants are very dangerous.
As far as Canada and Mexico go, there isn’t all that much that’s strategically significant to gain from them other than natural resources. This man scares me. I think he is going to take an America that has already been slipping in stature for decades and completely ruin it. Our world goes through cycles. Countries expand and contract. Rome was once the world’s leader, conquerer and economic and cultural super power. Great Britain once was so great and influential that folk could rightly brag that “ Then sun never sets on the British empire.” America has been slipping as a world leader and economic superpower for awhile. Trump likely has grasped upon that and seeks to bolster his ego with this imperialistic idea of restoring and even improving upon our countries past role.
Expansion while expedient comes at a serious cost. Our strained relations with many countries will fail. All those bases around the world that we currently utilize will be lost. Our national security will be challenged further. Lacking those bases for projecting power and lacking goodwill of the international community will hurt us as countries are rightly angered by our actions and push back. What he proposes will be sloppy. It will hurt a lot of people. It will destabilize the world. Just my two cents.
